Youngstown School is proud to be a healthy school, and we are proud to be a partner with APPLE Schools. We firmly believe in being an active, supportive and positive school community that empowers everyone to make healthy choices.
A home version of our nutrition policy will be sent home with each child and is at the back of the handbook.
Youngstown will foster a healthy school environment that supports students, staff, parents and community members to choose healthy, active lifestyles. Active living and healthy eating habits will be encouraged and supported by sustainable programs within the school community.
We are very pleased to be able to provide all of our students with the Leader in Me process which is based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. We believe that all students from Kindergarten to grade six can be strong leaders in their own right. The Leader in Me is an approach that allows staff to support students by fostering a deep sense of responsibility, respect and dedication to themselves, their school community and families.
Youngstown will empower everyone to make educated choices towards leading healthy lifestyles. A sustainable and positive environment will be a constant force in making healthy choice the only choice with the school community. Youngstown will work towards sustaining a goal of health for all.
The month of May is the time of year that brings signs of newness, revitalization and opportunity. For our students, we are heading into that part of the year where they might have a tendency to want to “wind down”. But, nothing should be further from the truth. Last week all of our students from grade one to six wrote the HLAT (Highest Level of Achievement Tests). These are EPSB mandated assessments that determine our student’s growth in writing.
Our grades six students begin writing their Alberta Provincial Achievement tests on the 12th of this month and continue on into the month of June. Now that the days are longer, we all develop a habit of wanting to stay up later. For our students it is important that they get plenty of rest as the last two months of the school year can be very taxing on their minds. We are confident that our students will demonstrate significant growth on all of these tests, and we know that we can count on home support as our students prepare for them.
I do want to acknowledge the great support of our School Council. At last month’s meeting they agreed to support our students and families by paying for the student agendas for 2016 -2017. This will be a great support to all. I do want to take a moment to recognize the work of our School Council members – Mrs. Klassen, Mrs. Cullum, Mrs. Zatorski, Mrs. Dix and Mrs. Panasiuk do a great deal to support all of our students. Not only do they meet with me and other staff every month, they are also responsible for organizing monthly school lunches, picking up apples from our supplier, and organising fundraising events that support all of our students. They are all terrific!
We are looking forward to recognizing the efforts of our volunteers at the May leadership assembly on the 26th. We are blessed to have some terrific volunteers, and we are looking forward to honouring them all at this time.
One thing to keep on the radar for next year is the selling of what we used to call Student Union Ticket Packs, and which will include many discount coupons. These will be available during the second week of September, and will be known as the ADmazing Saving Ticket Pack.
If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the school.
